Long conversations

A very long conversation takes up more and more of the space the model can hold in mind at once. When that happens, nouter compacts it: it summarizes the older part and continues from the summary, so the thread isn’t lost.

There’s nothing for you to do: when the history grows too large, the agent summarizes the earlier messages before answering. The chat shows a Context compacted marker at the point where the summary was made. The older messages are still there and you can read them, but the agent works from the summary.

If you want to tidy up a conversation before continuing, type /compact in the box and send it. The agent summarizes the earlier context and keeps the recent messages. While it does, the chat says Compacting….

If there are no earlier messages to summarize yet, you see the notice Nothing to compact — there are no earlier messages to summarize.

If the task changed so much that the summary no longer helps, start a new conversation. Each conversation has its own context, so a new one starts clean.
